The Way of the Sword: A Wednesday Training in Haedong Kumdo

Wednesday, April 9th – A glimpse into the warrior’s path.

There’s something electrifying about the clash of swords, the swish of a blade through the air, and the quiet focus of martial artists in motion. That’s exactly what we experienced during Wednesday’s Haedong Kumdo training session.

I was training with Bauke—a dedicated brown belt with eyes firmly set on black. His determination is inspiring, and it shows in every cut, every stance, and every drop of sweat. Together, we dove into the world of Korean swordsmanship, perfecting both single sword and double sword forms. Each movement was a meditation in motion—precise, powerful, and beautiful.

There’s a kind of magic in training forms: the repetition becomes rhythm, and the sword becomes an extension of your body. The single sword forms tested our control and fluidity, while the double sword forms pushed our coordination and ambidexterity to new heights. It’s a whole new level of martial arts mastery—blades moving in harmony like a deadly dance.

And then came the sparring drills—a chance to apply skill in real-time. It was intense, fast-paced, and honestly, a lot of fun. It’s one thing to practice forms, but sparring sharpens instincts and builds a deeper understanding of timing and distance. With padded swords and focused minds, we pushed each other to improve, encouraging growth with every strike and block.

What makes Haedong Kumdo so cool isn’t just the swordplay (though, let’s be honest, wielding a sword is always cool). It’s the blend of tradition, discipline, and modern martial artistry. It’s about pushing yourself, respecting your partner, and growing together on the martial path.

So here’s to another powerful session, and to Bauke—keep chasing that black belt, warrior. The sword remembers every cut.
